Dr. olive yonge teaching and learning SCHOLARSHIP day
In 2007, the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta initiated a special day to honour Dr. Olive Yonge. In 2008, they further celebrated her successes by starting the Dr. Olive Yonge Scholarship for graduate students studying teaching and learning.
The Dr. Olive Yonge Teaching and Learning Scholarship Day is in honour of an exceptional teacher and scholar at the Faculty of Nursing and is in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the discipline and profession of nursing.
It is a unique day as presenters receive a full hour to facilitate a debate that is core to teaching and learning. PowerPoint presentations are discouraged. Abstracts are accepted based on the description of the presentations, accompanied by critical thinking questions. How to use the arts to foster creativity, a one act play depicting the struggle a teacher goes through when failing a student in the clinical area and assessing students using an oral exam are examples of previous presentations. The day is an ideal forum for graduate students to present their work via oral or poster presentations. Up to a 150 faculty and students across disciplines attend the annual day.
